Een bos lijkt stil, maar onder de grond communiceren bomen onophoudelijk via hun wortels. Ze delen voedsel, sturen signalen door en houden elkaar overeind. Dat beeld vormt de basis voor ‘Dancing with the Trees’. Choreograaf Guilherme Miotto maakt dans als een levend landschap waarin elke beweging iets nieuws losmaakt.
Hoe maak je dans als je niets vooraf vastlegt? Choreograaf Guilherme Miotto doet het al jaren met zijn methode Instinctive Performance: dansers bewegen niet vanuit geleerde passen, maar vanuit wat hun lichaam op dat moment ingeeft. In ‘Dancing with the Trees’ zet hij die manier van werken voort.
Op het podium ontstaat een levend landschap waarin drie professionele dansers en zes kinderen samen bewegen. Zoals bomen via hun wortels met elkaar verbonden zijn, reageren de performers op elkaar. Elke beweging zet iets in gang, elke actie verandert het geheel. Met touwen die zich door de ruimte spannen als wortelstelsels en takken ontstaat een netwerk van lijnen en verbindingen.
Vanuit Miotto’s werkwijze Instinctive Performance groeit dans hier niet vanuit vaste choreografie, maar vanuit impuls, ervaringen en lichamelijke kennis. De aanwezigheid van kinderen speelt hierin een essentiële rol. Zij stappen niet in als uitvoerders, maar als performers. Hun directe en onderzoekende manier van bewegen opent het werk en zet het voortdurend in beweging.
‘Dancing with the Trees’ nodigt je uit om dans te ervaren als ecosysteem, waarin je als toeschouwer mag kijken hoe een levend landschap zichzelf vormt en voortdurend in beweging is.

A forest may seem quiet, but beneath the ground, trees are constantly communicating through their roots. They share nutrients, send signals and support one another. This image forms the basis of ‘Dancing with the Trees’. Choreographer Guilherme Miotto creates dance as a living landscape in which every movement sets something new in motion.
How do you create dance without determining anything in advance? Choreographer Guilherme Miotto has been doing so for years through his method, Instinctive Performance. Rather than moving from learned steps, dancers respond to what their bodies tell them in the moment. In ‘Dancing with the Trees’, he continues this way of working.
On stage, a living landscape emerges in which three professional dancers and six children move together. Just as trees are connected through their roots, the performers respond to one another. Every movement sets something in motion, and every action changes the whole. Ropes stretch across the space like root systems and branches, creating a network of lines and connections.
Through Miotto’s Instinctive Performance method, the dance does not grow from fixed choreography, but from impulses, experiences and embodied knowledge. The presence of the children plays an essential role. They do not take part simply as executors, but as performers in their own right. Their direct and exploratory way of moving opens up the work and keeps it constantly evolving.
‘Dancing with the Trees’ invites you to experience dance as an ecosystem, in which you, as a spectator, can watch a living landscape take shape and remain in continuous motion.
