Unpunished Youth – performed 24/10/2024 at Festival Circolo in Tilburg

Twintig jongens die één jongen in elkaar slaan – afgelopen week. Een groepje kinderen die een kind van 8 in elkaar slaan – paar weken geleden. Als je het zo hoort, gaat het niet zo lekker met de jongeren in de Vlashof in Tilburg Noord. Maar gelukkig is er ook een ander geluid.
Gisteren mocht ik in een gymzaaltje in Tilburg Noord kijken bij de prachtige voorstellingen van Corpo Máquina Society. Eerst Poles – Freerun Edition, waarin drie freerunners een halsbrekende, mega-gecontroleerde en intieme voorstelling spelen op een uit de kluiten gewassen klimrek dat eruit ziet als een spin.
En toen: Unpunished Youth. Wat heeft die voorstelling me ontroerd. Na de pauze komt een groep 16-jarige jongens van het AZC uit Oisterwijk op het podium. Zelfde decor, zelfde licht, maar nu met vioolmuziek.
Aan hun gezichten kun je zien hoe gespannen ze zijn. Nog nooit eerder hebben ze iets met kunst gemaakt. En nu gaan ze het podium op. De drie freerunners uit de eerste voorstelling gaan voor, de jongens volgen. Als volleerd acrobaten hangen, zwieren, klimmen ze over het spectaculaire klimrek dat het decor is van deze voorstelling. De spanning, de trots en de ontlading als een truc gelukt is. En wat zijn ze trots aan het einde, ongemakkelijk met de staande ovatie van het publiek die maar duurt en duurt.
En hier, dames en heren, hebben we dus een tegengif. Een tegengif tegen de agressie. Tegen de verveling.
Want Corpo Máquina Society is deel van Tilburg Noord. En de jongeren uit de wijk zijn welkom om iedere donderdagavond hun energie hier in te zetten in plaats van rond te hangen op het Verdiplein. Waar ze met mentoren als choreograaf Guilherme Miotto en deze drie freerunners leren wat creëren is, doorzetten, samenwerken, respectvol zijn. Op een plek in hun eigen wijk waar misschien wel nieuwe hoop kan ontstaan.
Laten we met alle professionals én vooral ook de bewoners in de wijk zoveel mogelijk van dit tegengif proberen toe te dienen.

Twenty boys beating up one boy – last week. A group of children beating up an 8-year-old – a few weeks ago. When you hear it like that, things don’t seem to be going so well for the young people in the Vlashof neighbourhood in Tilburg Noord. But fortunately, there is another side to the story.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to watch the wonderful performances of Corpo Máquina Society in a small gym in Tilburg Noord. First Poles – Freerun Edition, in which three freerunners perform a breakneck, mega-controlled and intimate show on an oversized climbing frame that looks like a spider.
And then: Unpunished Youth. That performance really moved me. After the interval, a group of 16-year-old boys from the asylum seekers’ centre in Oisterwijk came on stage. Same set, same lighting, but now with violin music.
You can see how tense they are from their faces. They have never done anything with art before. And now they are going on stage. The three freerunners from the first performance lead the way, the boys follow. Like accomplished acrobats, they hang, swing and climb over the spectacular climbing frame that is the set for this performance. The tension, the pride and the relief when a trick is successful. And how proud they are at the end, uncomfortable with the standing ovation from the audience that goes on and on.
And here, ladies and gentlemen, we have an antidote. An antidote to aggression. To boredom.
Because Corpo Máquina Society is part of Tilburg Noord. And the young people from the neighbourhood are welcome to come here every Thursday evening to channel their energy instead of hanging around on Verdiplein. Where, with mentors such as choreographer Guilherme Miotto and these three freerunners, they learn what it means to create, persevere, collaborate and be respectful. In a place in their own neighbourhood where new hope may arise.
Let us try to administer as much of this antidote as possible, together with all the professionals and, above all, the residents of the neighbourhood.
