Instinctive Neighbourhoord / Mondo Perfetto – Norbertijnen Parochie, Mariakerk, Tilburg – 4 april 2024
Corpo Máquina Society is het dans- en performance gezelschap waarmee choreograaf en artistiek leider Guilherme Miotto zijn werk in de wereld zet. We zijn een gezelschap waar verschillende bewegers zich thuis voelen en we denken altijd vanuit de ontmoeting. Werkend vanuit Tilburg en Breda spelen we voorstellingen in heel Nederland en daarbuiten. Voor repetities en ontmoetingen met de wijk strijken we regelmatig neer in de gymzaal bij basisschool De Vlashof aan de Sibeliusstraat. Onze volgende productie Mondo Perfetto gaan we spelen in kerken. Om de akoestiek én omdat de kerk past bij het verlangen naar verbinding dat uit Mondo Perfetto spreekt. Ook onze eerste publiciteitsfoto’s wilden we in een kerk maken. Daarvoor kwamen we terecht in de Mariakerk aan De Schans.
Parochie-coördinator Sonja van den Dries reageerde binnen een dag op de mail die we stuurden. Vlak vóór Pasen gingen we een kijkje nemen om te zien of het allemaal zou passen. In Mondo Perfetto doet namelijk een marimba mee die heel fotogeniek is, maar ook heel groot. Al snel bleek dat we op het altaar konden werken. Guilherme stelde voor om de foto’s te maken in een repetitie-setting. “En als we er dan toch zijn, kunnen we meteen ook mensen uit de parochie ontmoeten”, zei hij. “Daar ga ik voor zorgen”, zei Sonja.
En zo kwamen we op donderdag 4 april om 10.00 uur samen in de kerk: choreograaf en danser Guilherme, danseres Julia, muzikant Pedro, fotograaf Karin, drie medewerkers van Corpo Máquina Society en acht mensen uit de parochie. Op zijn marimba speelde Pedro voor ons twee fragmenten van de cellosuite nr.1 van Bach. Na afloop van het eerste fragment nodigde Guilherme ons uit om allemaal samen met Pedro op de marimba te spelen. Na het tweede fragment vroeg Guilherme ons om in tweetallen elkaars handen te bekijken alsof het de eerste keer in ons leven was dat we handen zagen. Vervolgens deden we dat nog eens, nu met iemand anders en begeleid door de marimba. Het was een mooie opdracht die het ijs brak, ook tussen mensen die elkaar een half uur daarvoor pas voor het eerst ontmoetten.
Terwijl Guilherme, Pedro, Julia en Karin op het altaar bleven om ook nog foto’s van de dans te maken, ging de rest van de groep naar de koffiekamer om na te praten. We deelden onze ervaringen en wisselden van gedachten. Over de suites van Bach die oorspronkelijk voor cello geschreven zijn en op de marimba nog meer resoneren. Over de bijzonder diepe vibratie van de marimba die je van binnen aanraakt. Over het opnieuw luisteren en zien van wat je denkt te kennen. Over het verschil tussen luisteren en voelen met ogen dicht of ogen open. Over het Tilburg-Noord van vroeger en het Tilburg-Noord van nu. Over de ontmoeting die zo verbindend voelde. Over de spirituele kracht van kunst en kerk, de aandacht om die kracht heel te houden en ieders zoektocht daarin in een steeds snellere wereld. “We kunnen veel van elkaar leren” zeiden we tegen elkaar. En daar gaan we voor.

Corpo Máquina Society is the dance and performance company through which choreographer and artistic director Guilherme Miotto presents his work to the world. We are a company where different performers feel at home, and we always think in terms of encounters. Based in Tilburg and Breda, we perform throughout the Netherlands and beyond. For rehearsals and meetings with the neighbourhood, we regularly gather in the gym at De Vlashof primary school on Sibeliusstraat. We will be performing our next production, Mondo Perfetto, in churches. This is because of the acoustics and because the church fits in with the desire for connection that Mondo Perfetto expresses. We also wanted to take our first publicity photos in a church. For this, we ended up at the Mariakerk on De Schans.
Parish coordinator Sonja van den Dries responded to our email within a day. Just before Easter, we went to take a look to see if everything would fit. Mondo Perfetto features a marimba that is very photogenic, but also very large. It soon became clear that we could work on the altar. Guilherme suggested taking the photos in a rehearsal setting. ‘And while we’re there, we can also meet people from the parish,’ he said. ‘I’ll take care of that,’ said Sonja.
And so, on Thursday 4 April at 10 a.m., we gathered in the church: choreographer and dancer Guilherme, dancer Julia, musician Pedro, photographer Karin, three employees of Corpo Máquina Society and eight people from the parish. Pedro played two excerpts from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 for us on his marimba. After the first piece, Guilherme invited us all to play the marimba with Pedro. After the second piece, Guilherme asked us to look at each other’s hands in pairs as if it were the first time in our lives we had seen hands. Then we did it again, this time with someone else and accompanied by the marimba. It was a beautiful exercise that broke the ice, even between people who had only met for the first time half an hour earlier.
While Guilherme, Pedro, Julia and Karin stayed on the altar to take photos of the dance, the rest of the group went to the coffee room to chat. We shared our experiences and exchanged thoughts. About Bach’s suites, originally written for cello, which resonate even more on the marimba. About the particularly deep vibration of the marimba that touches you inside. About listening and seeing again what you think you know. About the difference between listening and feeling with your eyes closed or open. About the Tilburg-Noord of the past and the Tilburg-Noord of today. About the encounter that felt so connecting. About the spiritual power of art and church, the attention to keep that power intact and everyone’s search for it in an increasingly fast-paced world. ‘We can learn a lot from each other,’ we said to each other. And that’s what we’re going for.
