It takes a Child to raise a Village / Football Meets Dance – Vlashof, Tilburg Noord – 25 t/m 30 oktober 2021

‘De minister komt vandaag kijken, omdat wij heel goed zijn.’ Zo vat de kleine Noureddine het bezoek van demissionair minister Ingrid van Engelshoven aan Corpo Máquina Society op zaterdag 30 oktober samen. In de gymzaal van basisschool De Vlashof in Tilburg Noord creëren dansers, theatermakers, acteurs, freestyle voetballers, muzikanten, studenten van kunstopleidingen en kinderen uit de wijk samen een magische wereld, waarin ze spelen met een bal, plezier hebben, vrij bewegen op muziek en improviseren met een mix van dans en theater. Iedereen is welkom om te komen kijken en mee te doen.
De kinderen zijn al de hele week van ’s ochtends tot ‘s avonds in de gymzaal op het Belaveld te vinden. Daar ontdekken ze onder begeleiding van verschillende coaches, zoals artistiek leider van Corpo Máquina Society Guilherme Miotto en tweevoudig wereldkampioen straatvoetbal Nasser El Jackson, hoe leuk het is om samen met de bal te spelen en op muziek te bewegen.
Als een slang glijden twee dansers over de vloer van de gymzaal, terwijl ze het publiek uitdagend aanstaren. Ze worden omringd door een groep kinderen en jongeren die gekleurde ballen omhoog stuiteren. Steeds hoger en hoger. De vioolmuziek zwelt aan, net als de stemmen van de spelers. Er ontstaat een betoverend samenspel van geluid, ballen, lichamen, water en andere attributen in de zaal.
Het publiek, onder wie demissionair minister Ingrid van Engelshoven van het ministerie van OCW en wethouder Cultuur Marcelle Hendrickx, kijkt geboeid toe. Om na de indringende slotscène luid te applaudisseren voor de jonge spelers die glunderend een buiging maken.
‘Je ziet dat de professionals en studenten zich verbonden voelen met de jongeren en kinderen uit de wijk. Ze zetten hun kunstenaarschap vrijwillig in om deze kwetsbare groep verder te brengen in het leven,’ zegt wethouder Marcelle Hendrickx. Misschien wordt deze manier van werken in de toekomst door andere wijken wel overgenomen, denkt ze. ‘Maar elke wijk is verschillend, dus je moet goed kijken welke vorm daarbij past’.
‘Zo’n project moet je als gemeenschap dragen. Als gemeente, beleidsmakers, scholen, cultuursector, maatschappelijk werk, opleidingen en studenten. Dat vind ik er zo mooi aan.’

‘The minister is coming to visit today because we are very good.’ That is how little Noureddine sums up the visit of outgoing minister Ingrid van Engelshoven to Corpo Máquina Society on Saturday 30 October. In the gym of De Vlashof primary school in Tilburg Noord, dancers, theatre makers, actors, freestyle footballers, musicians, art students and children from the neighbourhood create a magical world together, in which they play with a ball, have fun, move freely to music and improvise with a mix of dance and theatre. Everyone is welcome to come and watch and join in.
The children have been spending all week from morning to evening in the gym at Belaveld. There, under the guidance of various coaches, such as artistic director of Corpo Máquina Society Guilherme Miotto and two-time street football world champion Nasser El Jackson, they discover how much fun it is to play with the ball and move to music.
Like a snake, two dancers glide across the floor of the gym, staring defiantly at the audience. They are surrounded by a group of children and young people bouncing coloured balls. Higher and higher. The violin music swells, as do the voices of the players. An enchanting interplay of sound, balls, bodies, water and other props emerges in the hall.
The audience, including outgoing Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Alderman for Culture Marcelle Hendrickx, watches with fascination. After the poignant final scene, they applaud loudly for the young performers, who take a bow with beaming smiles.
‘You can see that the professionals and students feel connected to the young people and children from the neighbourhood. They voluntarily use their artistic skills to help this vulnerable group get ahead in life,’ says Alderman Marcelle Hendrickx. She thinks that other neighbourhoods may adopt this approach in the future. ‘But every neighbourhood is different, so you have to carefully consider which approach is most suitable.’
‘A project like this has to be supported by the community. By the municipality, policymakers, schools, the cultural sector, social services, educational institutions and students. That’s what I love about it.’
